MGarito | Design | Easel
This piece of was designed as a artistic carrying case with a collapsible easel embed within its frame. The greatest challenge in designing this piece was minimizing the weight inherent to the wooden easel. The original pass was nearly thirty pounds unloaded. With refinement in construction and design the end weight unloaded was half that of the original. To improve functionality several methods of collapsing the easel were considered and tested until the slim carrying case shown her was decided upon.
The carrying case has two internal storage compartments. The main compartment is to designed to hold drawing supplies, as well as small format media, such as a sketchbook. The retractable easel is also housed within this compartment. The other compartment is for large format media and is the full dimensions of the case.
The easel is constructed of nine segments of yellow pine, which are held to together with a series of dovetail joints. One the easel is pulled out, small locks prevent the easel from collapsing while in use.
The carrying case has been stained with multiple shades to create a strong contrast between the darker outer surfaces and the lighter inner surfaces. This visual contrast mirrors it disguised use when the easel is collapsed.
